The Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Student Hub has been transformed into a world-class workspace for graduate researchers in the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology. Challenged by growing cohorts and demands for flexible working conditions, Architectus were tasked with reinvigorating the existing space to support a mix of independent research, collaborative work and relaxation. The University of Adelaide now uses this project as a model for other HDR cohorts on campus.
During the planning phase, student representatives raised acoustics as one of their primary concerns. Architectus responded by choosing a mix of vibrant coloured Woven Image acoustic wall and ceiling solutions to resolve the need for sound treatment. A highlight feature being the gradient of colours gracing overhead the main thoroughfare. With technical and project delivery support from Woven Image’s Commercial Service Team, EchoPanel® 12mm and 24mm in Olive (384), Vanilla (468) and Cinnamon (167) were cut to custom designs and directly fixed to the ceiling. They provide colourful interest, facilitate an increased sense of belonging and support graduates by absorbing excess noise.
EchoPanel® Meridian and Longitude wall panels in Sage (580) help to section the space, visually distinguishing active and quiet zones. Sit-stand desks, meeting rooms and private booths were all reclad with the precision cut acoustic panels, benefitting users with colourful and textural absorptive surfaces.
Stylishly applied acoustics have resulted in an overall enhanced education environment. The HDR student hub has increased its flexibility, utilisation and collaborative opportunities. Students now have a better designed space to support them however they intend to use it.
