Located at Level 4, 126 Lambton Quay, Wellington, the Mana Mokopuna Office is a new 800m² workplace purpose-built for Mana Mokopuna Children's Commission. Known as Te Puna (meaning "the spring" or "life-giving water source"), the project represents the first time the organisation has been able to operate from a space specifically designed to meet its needs. The name reflects both the site's connection to a historic nearby stream and the meaning embedded within mokopuna, where puna symbolises a source of life, continuity, and connection between generations. The workplace supports staff while providing a welcoming setting for tamariki (children) and whānau (families).

The challenge was to create an environment that balanced functionality with warmth. While the space needed to accommodate the day-to-day requirements of a modern workplace, it was as important that it feels inviting and comfortable for children and young people who visit the office. Avoiding the typical corporate aesthetic was a key design priority, ensuring the environment felt approachable, inclusive, and engaging for everyone who enters.

The design of Te Puna draws heavily on natural materials, tactile finishes, and vibrant colour palettes that creates a sense of safety, connection, and playfulness. Thoughtful material selections helped soften the workplace environment, creating spaces that feel welcoming rather than clinical.

A strong emphasis was placed on acoustic performance throughout the fitout to support a variety of working styles and activities. Acoustic wall panels were incorporated into the meeting rooms and wellness room, helping to create calm and comfortable spaces for both staff and visitors. Acoustic solutions were carefully integrated into the design, providing effective sound management while contributing to the project's warm and engaging aesthetic. Zen Embossed Panel in colours 384 Olive and 580 Sage, along with EchoPanel® 12mm in 384 Olive were selected for these areas, introducing rich colour and texture that align with the natural material palette. These materials also enhance acoustic performance while reinforcing the cohesive visual language of the interior.

The result is a workplace that not only meets the practical needs of Mana Mokopuna but also reflects the values and purpose of the organisation. Te Puna provides a carefully considered environment where staff can work effectively and where children and families can feel welcome, safe, and supported.
